Ice Stupa Shara Village


Ice Stupa known to the world as Artificial glacier is built artificially by the people living in the water scarce region of Himalayas, this ice Stupa is situated in Shara Phuktse which is situated 67-74km from Leh. The ice Stupa is being built by the villagers with the help of dried trees, branches and roots. The main purpose of building this artificial glacier is to tackle the problem of water scarcity in the village during the summer months of June to August. The water is used by the villagers for irrigation and for household use.

      Ice stupa Shara is a Village in Kharu Block in Leh Ladakh District of Jammu & Kashmir State, India. It is located 70 KM towards North from District head quarters Leh. 276 KM from State capital Srinagar, Jammu . in shara village  though there is pipeline for drinking water but due to small scale or the quantity of water tank it could not provide water to all the villagers.
